Anticompetitive behavior from insurers, providers harms patients

In an op-ed in the Detroit News, George Pantos, executive director of the Healthcare Performance Management Institute, expressed dismay about the wave of mergers triggered by the healthcare reform law. As insurers and providers take steps to limit competition, ordinary patients lose out, he writes.

Advocates of the president's health care reform package have expressed alarm over a wave of mergers spurred by the new law.
 
Johns Hopkins Medicine, for instance, is snapping up hospitals in the Washington, D.C.-area, a move it describes as "driven largely by health care reform, which demands an integrated regional network."

Certainly, Elaine did in the 1996 “Seinfeld” episode, in which she tries to steal her own record from the physicians who secretively guard it. Though the show draws out the situation to an extreme, it does raise a good question about how medical records are used. Have you seen your medical record?
